Japan Travel Blog: Day 3 In Sapporo - Day Trip To Otaru

A nice sunny day on our 3rd day in Sapporo, unlike our first and second day when it was practically raining the whole day.

We took this opportunity to visits Otaru, a mere 30 minutes rapid train ride from Sapporo Station.

Tourist Information Centre is available if you're not sure how to go about in Otaru.

Walk right to the end to the tourist information counter.

A map is quite handy and useful exploring Otaru by foot.
Click here for the Otaru City Tourist Guide Map.

From Otaru Station it's a 10 minutes walk to the canal.

However, the walk to the Canal may take more than 10 minutes when there're shops and restaurant along the way.

Passed by the old Temiya railway line which is now defunct.

The sight of the canal is pretty and is lined with old warehouses buildings.
A pleasant place for a stroll although not much activities at the canal.

There're small vendors near the canal, selling mostly hand drawn paintings and postcards.

We walked into a small shop and bought croquette and mash potato.
It was a windy day so a hot snack helps to warm us up.

The shops in Otaru were quaint and each shop had its own unique charm.

'Ro Man Kan'...translated as Romantic shop.
This shop sells mostly little ornaments, souvenirs and jewellery.

All these ornaments and miniatures are so cute but a bit pricey. After conversion it can be RM30 (or more) for one tiny mini piece. In the end I walked out the shop empty handed.

There's one particular shop that sells animal carvings here. Again I was tempted to get one but ended up walking away without buying any.

One thing I love taking a stroll here is that there're so many shops to look at you'll find yourself taking your time and walk-in to every shop you see.

And of course tons of cute statue to see along the way.

My parent went back earlier when dad became light-headed.
On the way back we have lunch in one of the restaurant.

Fortunately the menu have pictures.

Pretty decent portion and reasonable price.
This restaurant is located on the first floor.
Easy to locate if you're walking from the station to the Canal.

After lunch, I bid farewell to my parent and went on to explore the rest of Otaru. The first place I went was the Music Box Museum, an antique museum showcasing collections of old music box.

Wandered in and out of many shops and find loads of kawaii things along the way.

Found the main building of the Otaru Music Box Museum.
This museum is a long walk from the train station.

I was surprised by the number and variety of music boxes I saw.
This place is a must-go if you love music boxes.

I was able to see the steam clock and clock tower chime when I walked out of the museum. I'm not sure how frequent it chime since I happened to past by. *Lucky Me ^^

Night falls early before 6pm and most shops were closing by then so it was time to bid farewell to Otaru and made my way back towards the station.

Otaru is so scenic and peaceful. Defiantly worth taking a trip down if you're in Sapporo.
